Bobby woke up one day and looked around at his surroundings. Here he was living with drug dealers in Tulsa. This is not the life he was meant to live. For several years he had been using “Ice” (a more potent form of crystal methamphetamine). Over that time he had lost his home and all meaningful relationships.
Bobby Gene King had moved to Porter, Oklahoma when he was six years old and by all accounts had a happy childhood. He fondly remembers raising animals, riding dirt bikes and driving four wheelers. The love of his life was his grandmother. Bobby and his grandmother spent lots of time together as they did odd jobs and filled their days with laughter.
When Bobby’s grandmother died his life began the slow decent into chaos. It started with a little drinking and escalated to an unstable life where he moved often and changed jobs. He lost his home and a wife. When he was introduced to “Ice” he was lost for three years.
Back in the drug house, Bobby began to come to himself. “Something told me to get up and leave.” Initially Bobby did not know where to go. The voice that got him started; seemed to go silent. He walked half way from Tulsa to Muskogee. Ultimately he wandered the streets of Muskogee until he heard of the Gospel Rescue Mission. While Bobby was not too sure about this Gospel thing, he figured a visit wouldn’t hurt. That initial visit changed his eternity.
After deciding to give GRM a chance, Bobby heard that voice again. This time it was Jesus calling him to salvation. In the men’s dorm Bobby answered that call and became a new creation.
2 Corinthians 5:17 New International Version (NIV)
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
Today, Bobby is learning new skills. Things like respecting others and keeping his life orderly help keep him focused so that his mind can clear from the years of addiction.
“The mission can change your life if you let it.” -Bobby Gene King
At the Gospel Rescue Mission we focus our efforts on helping to restore men and women to a healthy relationship with Jesus and then work to help them discover how the Creator has wired them. Bobby has been created to own his own business and live with a wife that he prays God brings to him someday.
Your investment with the Gospel Rescue Mission is repaid with lives transformed and changed. Thank you for helping men like Bobby experience more of Jesus.
