Donald’s Story

If it weren’t for Muskogee’s drug court referring Donald Hobson to the Gospel Rescue Mission he said he would probably be back in jail.

When Hobson arrived at the mission he had nothing but the clothes on his back.

“The people were wonderful and allowed me to go through their clothes closet, provided me hygiene products, a bed and meals.”

  • Because of the generosity of supporters like you we are able to provide interview and nice clothing to our men and women staying at the mission.  We just might be the only shelter in the nation with a dress code.  Visit us on Thursdays to experience dress for success Thursdays.

Hobson said that the people he had been hanging around with people who had not changed their life for the good. This place is a wonderful place that will get you back on your feet spiritually and mentally.”

  • Experts say that we become like the 5 people we spend the most time with.  At GRM we encourage the men and women to make the Father, Son and Holy Spirit three of those and carefully guard your time with others.

He said that the staff were “just wonderful” and that “you are 100 percent turned around.” Dobson has a full-time job at Superior Linen.

  • The only sustainable program to help people out of poverty is work and Gospel Rescue Mission’s upcoming Employment First Program will help many get back into the workforce.  We’ve found that relatively few disabilities keep people from being able to do some sort of work.  Everyone can add value to our community!  We are becoming proficient at identifying opportunities and provide work training.  Everyone deserves a chance to succeed.

“Once I get back on my feet, I would be glad to come back and help them with anything.”

  •  Looking through history and exploring what it takes to help men and women rise out of poverty it is amazing how often this idea of giving back to society comes up.  We encourage our men and women to volunteer throughout the community.

Donating to GRM is supporting our efforts to go beyond a handout.  Consider a 3 year pledge today to see more changed lives!

Bobby’s Story

Bobby McGowen originally came back to Muskogee to be with his daughter and realized that the family situation was not good for him.

“I was at the point of time where I was ready to get back on drugs and really mess myself up,” he said. He said he heard about the Gospel Rescue Mission and decided to check it out. He did so by going to lunch and dinner for about two weeks.

“I decided to give it all over and check in and get the help I needed,” McGowen said. The people at the mission welcomed him with open arms and showed him that they actually wanted to help him be his best, he said.

“They got me to open my mind up and that being on drugs is not an option and coming back to God is where I needed to be spiritually,” he said. The mission helped McGowen make plans, keep his mind open to what’s wrong and what’s bad and what he needed to stay away from.

McGowen said that he has two options — the first is to stay at the mission and become a staff member. The second is to stay there long enough to make a difference then get a job and leave.

“The people at the mission have given me opportunities to realize I’m not a bad person — that I have good in myself and am not always a bad person,” he said.

McGowen said he recommended the Gospel Rescue Mission because they have “an awesome staff” and are there to help people and not look down on them. “They want what’s best for you to better yourself, if you’re willing.”

He said that for those don’t want to reside at the mission, “they can always get breakfast, lunch and dinner for free.” While there, McGowen recommends to talk to the mission staff and find out what they can do for you.

          “It’s all about choices.”
